Dear Jeweller

Recently, we had a burglary in our home. Aside for the mental anguish sustained, our experience with the insurance company was particularly frustrating. We estimate the loss in excess of $10,000. The insurance company only settled for $1000.00. My cousin had a burglary a few years ago and was awarded the full loss amount of $7000.00 because she had her jewelry appraised by a jeweller periodically. Is it important so to have your jewelry appraised?

Vanessa Galvez, Ville Ste-Catherine, Quebec.

Hello Vanessa.

As a jeweller, I have seen this scenario too many times. Standard household insurance packages limit jewelry coverage to $1,000.00. This means that, in the event of a loss, the insurance company will only cover jewelry to this amount provided that you supply proof of purchase for the lost articles. Even if you had $50,000 of coverage for household goods, the jewelry loss will be limited to $1,000.00.

However, I have seen insurance companies awarding replacement value for stolen jewelry well above these standard limitations. Here are some things that you can do that will greatly improve your chances to recover the full value of your loss. Here are some points that I would suggest you keep in mind, to avoid similar experience in the future.

1) Keep on file all proofs of purchase for all your ornaments.

2) Get an appraisal for those items valued above $1,000.00. This is not just a written receipt of the item, but a “appraisal by certified evaluator or gemologist Most insurers will accept this document and award you the full replacement value of the item regardless of the $1000.00 limitation for jewelry.

3) At Bijouterie Guru we have on staff qualified evaluators for your jewelry appraisal needs. We will provide you with a certified document with a photographed and detailed description of your ornament. In the event of a loss, we will be able to virtually duplicate your ornament after your insurance settlement.

4) Ask your insurer to cover you for full replacement value of your valuables. In the event of a loss, this will ensure that the gold bullion market price is taken into consideration when your insurer processes your claim resulting in a current market value settlement.

5) High value ornaments should be kept in a bank safety deposit box if not worn often. Store your evaluation certificates in the bank safety deposit box as well.
