Dear Jeweller

I recently inherited a pearl necklace from my grandmother’s estate. I noticed that the condition of the stringing is not very good. In fact, I do not wear it for fear of losing it. Even the colour of the pearls is not very white. I don’t know if I should wash the necklace. I would like to get it repaired. Every jeweller I have consulted has given me a different remedy for my problem. Would you please shed some light on the plan of action?

Nancy Lafrance, Sainte-Foy, Quebec

Hello Nancy

Pearls, which take years to grow, can last for generations if you care for them properly

Because they are softer than other gems, it’s important to treat your pearls gently and store them away from other pieces of jewelry that can scratch or dull their surface. A soft pouch is the best place to keep your pearls when you aren’t wearing them.

Your pearls should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Don’t expose them to chemicals such as hairspray, perfume or makeup, and never spray beauty products directly onto your pearls.

Care of your Pearl jewelry.

To clean your pearls, don’t use harsh chemicals or commercial jewelry detergent. Instead, after taking them off , wipe them with a soft cloth or use mild soapy water if they have come into contact with perfumes, cosmetics, hairspray or perspiration. Never immerse your pearls in water - simply wipe them down with a damp cloth.

Pearl re-stringing.

At Bijouterie Guru, we restring your pearls with great care using the finest cotton and nylon string in the matching colour. Moreover, we do quality re-stringing with knots between each pearl to ensure a durable finished product.

Your pearl necklaces and bracelets should be professionally restrung by a jeweller every other year or once a year if you wear them often. More about our Pearl restringing service.
